Last kick at the White Horse -
To-day I drank the last glass of beer ever to be drawn at the White Horse Inn, Old Sharlston, near Wakefield. After 300 years the building is now condemned as unsafe because of mining subsidence. The masonry is split in dozens of placesand the whole inn is tilted. Mr. E. Ernest Bell, the licensee, said: "The White Horse has been in my family since at least 1845." For years I have had difficulty in sleeping because my bed is on a slope. I rolled right out when I turned over. Now I am going to new premises 300 yards away.

Benevolent Ghost at Sharlston -
When the pitter-patter of feet is heard in the upstairs passage of The White Horse Inn in Old Sharlston and no physical body is observed, landlord Ray Baxter and his wife wonder if the ghost of 'Lady' Hodgson has returned to pace the floors of her ancestral home (writes Tony Myles). Mrs Hodgson lived in this house 70 years ago when the accompanying picture of her was taken. She was given the title 'Lady' by local people who benefited from her bountiful and charitable works. The house she lived and died in must be one of the most picturesque and tastefully designed in Yorkshire. It is certainly among the oldest buildings in Sharlston which has some dating back to the 1600s.
